Balclutha

Balclutha is the main service centre for Clutha District and the Catlins - the biggest town on the Southern Scenic Route (SSR) between Dunedin and Invercargill. Travellers can enjoy a rural township experience with a range of friendly retail and food outlets. There is also a camping ground and a number of motels to provide a range of accommodation options. The Clutha River/Mata-Au bridge, with its concrete arches, spans the second longest, but largest by water volume, river in New Zealand.

Townships

Milton This township has a rich history in woollen and timber mills, both of which are still productive industries in the town today. Another highlight is the Tokomairiro Presbyterian Church opened in 1889.


Waihola The lakeside domain has many activities available including kayaking, fishing, a pontoon, and water slides for children – making it a great place to take a lunch stop.


Taieri Mouth A great spot for swimming and surfing, with interesting rocks to explore at the southern end of the main beach. Livingstonia Park is a peaceful spot for a family picnic.


Balclutha A pleasant town on State Highway 1 with a range of facilities and retail outlets.
