Balclutha

Access to this walk can be found at the back of Naish Park on Charlotte Street in Balclutha. This easy going walk will take you one and a half hours to complete. You will follow the mighty Clutha River/Mata-Au and be able to take in the fabulous array of flora and fauna including an amazing display of rhododendrons. You are able to bike this track.

These internationally significant wetlands are a 315 hectare waterfowl reserve with numerous shallow peaty lagoons, a labyrinth of waterways and two islands fringed with flax, raupo (native bulrush) and grasses. The wetlands, renowned for their abundance of kai (food), contain Whakaraupuka (Ram Island) which is the former site of the Pa (fortified village) of Tukiauau. The wetlands are located at 854 Clarendon/Berwick Road, signposted off State Highway 1.

This track starts 400m south of the bridge at the Taieri Mouth, crossing a fence midway up the gully as it passes from the (DOC) reserve into private land. The route leads up out of the gully and onto Finlayson Road.

A 16km return hike from Taieri Mouth to John Bull Gully and back. The track follows the south bank of the Taieri River. Saline and freshwater vegetation gives way to open shrubland and stands of lush podocarp forest featuring Halls totara, miro, tree fern/ katote and regenerating kahikatea. If you are travelling in a convoy, you can park one vehicle at the end of the Millennium Track which links John Bull Gully with Taieri Ferry Road. The Millennium Track is 7km long, so if you join both tracks together and walk one way, it should take you approximately four hours to walk the full 15km. Good footwear is essential. Taieri Ferry Road joins SH 1.

This walk follows the Taieri River through native bush to a picturesque area known as John Bull Gully. You can turn around and return to the start or carry on to Taieri Mouth.

Outram Glen is 23 km from Dunedin via Three Mile Hill. Approaching Outram township, turn right immediately after crossing the Taieri River Bridge. Stay on the gravel road that runs alongside the river to reach the carpark. Outram Glen is a popular picnic and swimming area. The walking track to Lee Stream has recently been upgraded and makes an excellent family walk. The track begins at the car park and runs alongside the river. After approximately 30-40 minutes there is a short, steep stepped section leading to a long traverse above the river. After about an hour the track returns to the river and soon reaches the confluence of Lee Stream and the Taieri River.
